Grave of the fireflies directed by Isao Takahata is a war based animated film. The story is set around the end of World War II, when in a fire attack Seita and Setsuko’s house is destroyed and their mother dies in it. Both the children move in with their aunt but after a while, due to lack of resources she tells them to leave. With no food and water, they take shelter in an abandoned bomb house and during the night they release fireflies to light the room. With a powerful and emotional story, this film is a harsh but realistic portrayal of war tragedies faced by innocent people. 

Howl’s Moving Castle

Based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this movie is about a beautiful girl Sophie turned into an old woman by an evil witch. While searching for a cure, she encounters the Howl’s Moving Castle. Howl is a wizard who holds the power of releasing Sophie, it is not that easy as he’s also stuck in an unknown curse. With a lot going on, the kingdom gets involved to use Howl as their soldier. This movie builds a great curiosity and innocent love in the minds of viewers.

Ponyo

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the film Ponyo is based on the little mermaid. A goldfish princess so curious to explore the surface worlds encounters a human boy, Sosuke. Sosuke names her Ponyo. Ponyo, using her powers becomes human, but this imbalances the cycle of nature and also creates a huge argument between Ponyo and her father. The story of strong love and believe makes it a must watch film.

The Wind Rises

Again directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this film is an animated biography of Jiro Horikoshi who designed Mitsubishi A5M aircraft. Jiro since childhood dreamed of building an airplane and pursued his Career in it. He is so passionate about it that he tries to adapt any object into the aircrafts design. This film portrays the importance of childhood dreams, which when taken seriously becomes the biggest reason for success. The film is set during World War II and depicts how Jiro and other men like him only thought about making a fighter plane without getting involved in any politics or mischief. It just tells us how a child feels when he fulfills his goal of life.  

Spirited Away

This Oscar winning Japanese fantasy film is also directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This film is an adventurous journey of a ten year old girl Chihiro who gets lost in a magical world by taking a wrong turn on her way to her house with her parents. Chihiro inside finds a boy Haku who is cursed and was also lost many years back. He explains Chihiro how to survive and return. But Chihiro goes through a lot of scuffles during her time there and at the end saves the day. This film is the only anime to win an academy award for best animated feature which makes a legend in the world of animation.
