When you stop a little to think about it, cheese is always a little weird. After all, it’s prepared by curdling the milk that spews forth from animals. Still, you can’t imagine how weirder it can get! Here are some weird types of cheese, far away from the conventional pedestrian mozzarella and cheddar, that you might have never thought about before.
You’ll never be able to guess what the active ingredient in this cheese is! No, it’s not the plain old coal, it’s plain old charcoal. Just like the material it’s made of, this is black on the outside and on the inside. People say it tastes good and not at all like burnt carbon atoms.
This cheese is from donkey’s milk and doesn’t seem very crazy on the first blush. However, once you take into consideration the ludicrous price of donkey’s milk, it gets pretty kooky. A pound of this will set you back a cool $1,700, what do you think about it now?
This cheese has got its name from a quaint French village and it has one signature feature: It’s smelly, very smelly. For some people, it’s a no-go because of its pungent, stinky-feet odour. But who are able to get past its stench, they get complex, meat, savoury flavours that are an absolute joy.
Guess what is this made from? Well, everybody’s favourite summertime treat, live maggot larvae. It is considered unsavoury to have this cheese once the maggots die, so you are going to get a little bit of squiggle.
Keeping aside the one made from maggot larvae, this one is even yummier, made from the excrement produced by mites. You read that right! Mites poop, and their poop becomes cheese. Life is beautiful (gross for some).
