Frontier

This Canadian historical-drama series co-created by Rob Blackie and Peter Blackie, chronicles the North American fur trade which happened in Canada/Rupert’s land during the 18th Century, sometime between the years of 1763 and 1779. The show produced by Discovery Canada includes several well-backed historical facts. The story follows an Irish-Cree outlaw, Declan Harp (Jason Momoa) who attempts to wrest control over the fur trade from the mighty Hudson’s Bay Company that is currently handled with the aim of illegal activities. The action and mystery, along with some intriguing twists and turns in the series makes for an interesting insight into a usually undiscussed part of Canadian history.

Rhythm + Flow

The music reality series Rhythm + Flow is Netflix’s first original music competition program. The music competition show is judged by three rappers Tip “T.I.” Harris, Cardi B, and Chance the Rapper travel across the US to audition hopeful musicians and find the next big rapper. The contestants are tasked with challenges, rap battles, freestyles, and other obstacles to win a $250,000 cash prize as well as exposure and notoriety. In several episodes, the judges are joined by guest judges is several episodes to give additional feedback to the competitors.

Toy Boy

The Spanish drama produced by Atresmedia and Plano a Plano follows four male strippers nicknamed “toy boys” who work in the affluent, seaside vacation city of Marbella, Spain. Dogs Of Berlin

The German series created by Christian Alvart follows two police officers who investigate the murder of the fictional German-Turkish soccer player Orkan Erdem. Erol Birkan (Fahri Yardim) is a by-the-book police type of Turkish origin and Kurt Grimmer (Felix Kramer) a corrupt cop who has underworld connections that mire the case in controversy. The grim ‘n’ gritty crime series combines Neo-Nazis, the Lebanese mob, Turkish nationalists, soccer hooligans, and the Berlin mafia. The show which is described by Netflix as violent, gritty, and dark is unapologetically macho, with football and violence.

Kingdom

The South Korean political period horror-thriller series created by Kim Eun-hee is Netflix’s first original Korean series and one of the best Netflix horror series. The series is adapted from the webcomic series, The Kingdom of the Gods, authored by Kim Eun-hee and drawn by Yang Kyung-il. The show is set in the 1500s of Joseon Korea where a mysterious plague overtakes the land. While strange rumors spread about the ill king, the crown prince becomes the only home against the pandemic. The show is an epic zombie drama with massive battle scenes amidst the striking scenery, royal politics, class warfare, and a sword-swinging army against the legions of undead.

Godless

The American Western drama miniseries created by Scott Frank is set in a period three decades before that of Peaky Blinders. The show has similarities with Peaky Blinders as both are grim, uncompromising, and violent. The show focuses on Roy Goode, an injured outlaw on the run from his former boss, Frank Griffin, and found a new life in a quiet town populated only by women. Frank Griffin, a menacing outlaw terrorizes the West in search of Roy Goode who is his son-like partner turned mortal enemy. The show described by Netflix as gritty and dark has a sheer amount of mayhem, but will still catch you off-guard with its unyielding bleakness.

Dope

The American documentary web television series exposes the production, logistics, sale, and consumption of drugs. Dope takes you through the perspectives of law enforcement as well as dealers and users of various drugs. The show reveals how horrible the war against drugs is through a series of interviews with cops, criminals, and addicts. The show gives you a frustrating watch and completely unsurprising at once with the portrayal of America’s narcotics policies. Hache

The Spanish crime drama series created by Verónica Fernández is a feast for Peaky Blinders fans with its tense, gripping, and dramatic scenes. Hache is a grown-up and highly involving drama set in the world of drug trafficking in Barcelona in the 60s. The story follows two central characters drug kingpin Malpica (Javier Rey) and Helena (Adriana Ugarte). Helena gains the love and trust of Malpica, drug lord of a dangerous heroin cartel, and she hones the skills to rise the ranks.

Jamtara

The Netflix Original Indian crime drama series directed by Soumendra Padhi is inspired by true events. Jamtara takes you on a thrilling journey into the village of Jamtara in Jharkhand, which turns out to be India’s phishing capital. The show revolves around the lucrative phishing operations quietly run by young cousins, Sunny and Rocky, along with their friends in Jamtara a small town in Jharkhand. Their operations are soon noticed by a criminal mastermind who wants in on their scheme and a cop wants to fight it. The show which is described by Netflix as ominous, gritty, and dark is wildly intense as tensions increase and lives are threatened.
