Top 5 Meryl Streep Treats On Netflix

The name. The brand. The charm. There’s a reason why almost every second acceptance speech during an awards ceremony in Hollywood has the winner reference, Mama Streep. And if you are half a Meryl Streep fan as we are here, do yourself a favor and get going on these Top 5 Meryl Streep outings on Netflix.

Kramer Vs. Kramer

Not only did this film get Streep an Oscar for her supporting role in the flick, but the movie went down not just as one of the best Streep movies, but one of the better movies in film history. The movie revolves around a woman who struggles to find her identity after walking out on her husband and their son. Things move on. The husband develops a wonderful bond with the son, the dust finally settles in, when the wife returns. To get back her son. What ensues is an ugly court battle that sets itself to destroy all involved.

Julie & Julia

This one was all heart, inspiration, warmth, and smiles. The movie draws from two literary accounts – acclaimed chef Julia Child’s autobiography, My Life in France, and American author Julie Powell’s memoir, Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously. The story revolves around Powell and her cooking journey that takes the form of mastering Child’s cookbook. The movie takes you through two journeys – one, of course of Powell’s and another of Child – her escapades in France, her love with cooking and the culinary arts and the world of food, cooking, flavors, relationships, and love. Got Streep an Oscar nod.

Sophie’s Choice

With the Holocaust for a backdrop (and context rather), nuanced storytelling and Streep’s stunningly heartbreaking performance, this movie is quite the gem. No wonder it won Streep her first Oscar statuette for a leading role. Sophie, a Holocaust survivor and her Jewish-American lover, Nathan, who along with being unpredictable is obsessed with the Holocaust. Enter the scene – their writer neighbour. Along with their friendship with the writer, the third entrant in the scene brings in conflicting scenarios for Sophie. No prize for guessing what’s the choice she had to make really.

The Hours

One of the lesser-known Streep gems, if I may say so. But stunning nonetheless, and seem to have a fan-following of its own. The 2002 psychological drama stars other award-winning actors, like Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. The story connects three women of different generations, all connected by celebrated author Virginia Woolf’s 1925 novel, Mrs. Dalloway. The trio includes Woolf herself. They all struggle with their own battles and try to win over their own demons. Not an easy watch but a sure shot winner.

The Post

Stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Won Streep an Oscar nomination. Enough said?

Or not. The movie chronicles a phase in the life of Katharine Graham, the first woman publisher of a mainstream American newspaper – The Washington Post (explains the movie title eh?) The narrative tells us how Graham coupled up with her former editor to uncover a coverup orchestrated by the government to hush away secrets that involve four former US presidents and spread across decades. With elements of gender bias in the field, conspiracy and assured political drama, this one’s a must watch.

Even at the end of the list, there’s no way we could and should end. There’s The Iron Lady, The Devil Wears Prada (OF COURSE!), Out Of Africa, Florence Foster Jenkins, and what not. But for starters, these should do.

And once you’re through, check out our other Netflix lists too.
