Why Is FIFA Reportedly Ending Its 30-Year Partnership With EA Sports?

FIFA and EA Sports have reportedly decided to part ways after 30 strong years of their partnership. Negotiations over FIFA’s licensing deal with Electronic Arts reached a dead end a few weeks back, and the two have given subtle hints of their decision.

Why Is FIFA Reportedly Ending Its 30-Year Partnership With EA Sports?

So what’s the reason behind it?

Reports suggest that FIFA had requested EA Sports to double its licensing fee of $150M per year to $1B for four years. As EA refused, FIFA has now decided to end the long-standing exclusive partnership with the video-gaming company, reassessing its approach to sports and the gaming industry.

What should we expect next?

FIFA has reportedly been in talks with various gaming and tech giants in order to broaden its horizon and provide football gamers with especial experiences. In its written statement, it said, “Gaming and eSports are the fastest-growing media verticals on the planet, with new and diverse types of games launching continuously. It is therefore of crucial importance for FIFA and its stakeholders to maximise all future opportunities for football and gaming fans.” It added, “FIFA is bullish and excited about the future in gaming and esports for football, and it is clear that this needs to be a space that is occupied by more than one party controlling all rights,” the statement reads. It continued, “Technology and mobile companies are now actively competing to be associated with FIFA, its platforms, and global tournaments. Consequently, FIFA is engaging with various industry players, including developers, investors and analysts, to build out a long-term view of the gaming, esports and interactive entertainment sector.”

Meanwhile, EA Sports is reported to have been looking elsewhere to continue its football gaming experience. EA Sports general manager had mentioned that the company had been considering changing global EA Sports football games. Electronic Arts has now registered a trademark for ‘EA Sports F.C.’, should FIFA walk out.
