There are never enough holidays in a year! As we cozied our way into the New Year and started looking for upcoming holidays, we couldn’t help but wish we had more, and were in the land of fiction enjoying the made-up days that we wish were real. Here are some of our favourite fictious holidays that we’re hoping will be realised soon:

Harry Potter Day, Harry Potter

Celebrated on 31st of October

Imagine a day with wands, brooms and cloaks all around, when the taverns serve butterbeer, the only thing we read is The Daily Prophet, and the destruction of You-Know-Who and his Death Eaters is celebrated. The Harry Potter day falls on Halloween and marks the very day the Dark Lord was defeated by our Hogwarts friends and their mentors. We’re sure this day is celebrated every year at Hogwarts now but, oh, how we wish we could celebrate it too!

Festivus, Seinfeld

Celebrated on 23rd of December

“Until you pin me, George, Festivus is not over!”

The Costanza family’s annual day of expression of disappointment, Festivus, was written by Daniel O’ Keefe’s son, and is a trademark of the loved sitcom Seinfeld. Festivus was started by Frank Costanza against the commercialisation and pressure that comes along with Christmas. Gather around an aluminium pole on the 23rd of December, dear friends, and bring a list of the ways in which you have been disappointed by your close ones. (P.S. Occasional fist-fights and pinning-down is permissible!)

Half-Christmas, Workaholics

Celebrated on 25th of June

Once-a-year Christmas is never enough! How about two days of paid vacation and a Half-Christmas party? Half-Christmas is a holiday celebrated on the Comedy Central show, Workaholics, where the workers go on a strike demanding time off from work to celebrate the day. We’re in, are you?

Durin’s Day, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings

Celebrated when the last moon on Autumn and the first Sun of Winter appear in the sky together

The Dwarven new year, created by J.J. Tolkins, would surely have been a grand-feast day, was it celebrated in our world. Basking in the enthralling beauty of the Misty Mountains, finding doors on the eastern and western sides of the range and waiting for the keyhole that would lead us to Moria… Petition to declare Durin’s day as National Adventure day, anyone?

Treat Yo’ Self Day, Parks and Recreation

Celebrated on 13th of October

Okay, not a holiday, per se, but this personal day from Parks and Recreation could might as well be made one! Be it getting manicures and pedicures, eating sushi made out of fish that were former pets of celebrities or buying fine goods – the self-care, self-pampering and self-stuffing on the 13th of October every year gives us the loving energy that we could all use. We can’t wait to be on board with Donna and Tom as we get ready for this day!
