Have you ever tried to make art with bread or toast? Sure, we’ve all done the childish smiley-faced ketchup and teddy-shaped sandwiches for breakfast. You may have noticed the various shades bread takes on as you toast it more and more until it’s burnt to a black crisp. But you could not have come up with the idea that Matteo Lucca did, because it is as bizarre as it is marvelous.

Lucca is a ‘bread-sculptor’, and before you ask, no, he doesn’t simply stack bread pieces on top of each other. He actually, literally, bakes dough in huge handcrafted molds, using a special oven he built for this purpose. This gives us completely original and authentic pieces, unique every time in terms of ‘cooked-ness’. ;

As you can tell, these are a little unsettling to look at. Such sculptures of a well-researched human figure can seem almost scary, with an element as familiar as bread composing it.

The Italy-based contemporary artist graduated in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. The shades of raw and burnt bread blend together in his work, giving it a natural and almost wild quality.

If you look closely, you’ll find the resemblance between these sculptures and the plaster casts of corpses found in archeological excavations. The figures seem somewhat fragmented, barely held together with cracks and layers of film. A little creepy, but it’s truly admirable once you get past that feeling.
