<p>Learning history as subject in school, is so passé. Am I right, or am I right? Well, to be fair most of us may not be in school anymore (well, is anyone in school per se anymore?) But Netflix has been doing quite the swell job in picturising history, for us. </p>



<p>Most of the historical shows are usually fictionalised as they attempt to make history interesting with high-stakes drama, opulent costumes and what not. If you haven’t watched many period shows and are looking for the best way to get started, here is a list of the top 5 historical dramas that are currently streaming on Netflix.</p>

<p>Netflix’s medieval fantasy drama series, created by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, is based on their graphic novel of the same name. The series retells the charming mercenary King Arthur&#8217;s quest to find Merlin&#8217;s sword. All after a young sorceress rebel, Nimue (Thirteen Reasons Why&#8217;s Katherine Langford) armed with mysterious powers and a legendary sword, joins forces with him on a mission to save her people. </p>

<p>The American documentary series, directed by Dawn Porter, focuses on the United States Senator, Robert F. Kennedy. The documentary series was released on Netflix on April 27, 2018, and has four parts tracing Kennedy’s political lore in the 1960s. The documentary includes his presidential campaign which ended with his assassination on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The show portrays Kennedy’s work on his brother’s campaigns, JFK’s death, Bobby’s championing of civil rights, and the events in the aftermath of his killing. The show consists of archival footage during Kennedy&#8217;s time as Attorney General and Senator, as well as his conversations with brothers, United States President John F. Kennedy and the United States Senator Ted Kennedy.</p>

<p>The historical drama series, developed by Ronald D. Moore, is based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novel series. The breath-taking series stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married former World War II nurse, who in 1945 is suddenly transported back to Scotland in 1743. She finds that her life is constantly threatened in a dangerous new reality and is forced to wed the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) out of safety. Their marriage turns into a passionate love affair that transcends time and space. </p>

<p>The British period crime drama series, created by Steven Knight, is set in Birmingham, England in 1919, and follows the exploits of the Peaky Blinders gang in the aftermath of WWI. The show is loosely based on a real 19th-century urban youth gang of the same name. The economic upheaval has made Britain a hotbed for despair and criminal acts, with a fight for survival between returning soldiers, regular citizens, and local gangs. Stars Cillian Murphy, as the gang leader and war hero, Thomas Shelby, who aspires to go legitimate someday. The arrival of Inspector Chester Campbell, played by Sam Neill, threatens his daily operations.</p>

<p>The historical drama series, created and principally written by Peter Morgan, offers an intimate look at the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The show chronicling her drama, romances, political rivalries, along with the historical events of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the latter half of the 20th century. The show, starring Claire Foy in the titular role, explores the early years of Elizabethan reign in the first and second season. The third season explores the middle age of the queen and Olivia Colman took over the role of Queen Elizabeth II. The fourth season, which again stars Colman, is expected to be released late 2020.</p>
