<input type="hidden" value="" data-essbisPostContainer="" data-essbisPostUrl="https://yodoozy.com/academy-award-nominations-announced/" data-essbisPostTitle="Academy Award Nominations Announced" data-essbisHoverContainer=""><p>The 89th Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday and there have been interesting spring ups such as <strong><em>La la Land</em></strong> grabbing 14 nominations- record tying with &#8220;<strong><em>Titanic</em></strong>&#8221; <strong><em>1997 </em></strong>and &#8220;<strong><em>All About Eve</em></strong>&#8221; <strong><em>1950 </em></strong>&#8211; both films ended up winning a best picture, and <strong><em>La La Land</em></strong> doesn&#8217;t seem to be one to lose the big award category. With nominations in leading categories like best director, picture, actor, actress and screenplay we bet the movie is going to tick off a lot of its nomination boxes as wins.</p>

<p>Surprisingly as Mel Gibson returns with a best director nomination from his &#8220;hollywood lockdown&#8221; amidst the controversy on his racist and anti-semitic comments, showing the forgiving nature of the Academy. With his directing in <strong><em>Hacksaw Ridge</em></strong>, the movie earned five nominations including a best actor nomination with Andrew Garfield.</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s Oscar nomination has in its pack people of colour in leading categories such as Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Dev Patel, Ruth Negga, Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris in best, actor, actress and supporting categories as opposed to 2016&#8217;s <strong><em>#OscarSoWhite </em></strong>which had no non-white in leading categories. It is obvious that the Academy has come to right it&#8217;s wrong, accept coloured talents and make <strong><em>#OscarSoWhite </em></strong>so last year.</p>
<p>With lots of competition in leading categories, we didn&#8217;t help but notice Amy Adams missing in the Best Actress category for her admirable performance in Dennis Villeneuve&#8217;s film &#8220;<strong><em>Arrival</em></strong>&#8220;. So also was Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae for &#8220;<strong><em>Hidden Figures</em></strong>&#8221;</p>
<p>Meryl Streep earned her 20th Oscar nomination with Best Actress for &#8220;<strong><em>Florence Foster Jenkins</em></strong>&#8220;. With her impeccable acting skills, some have rolled eyes to the nomination as it seems obvious she isn&#8217;t winning this one.</p>
<p>Young and First-timers brilliance in directing didn&#8217;t go unnoticed in this year&#8217;s nominations with Damien Chazelle, Dennis Villeneuve and Barry Jenkins earning nominations for Best Director category. The category embraced diversity with Barry Jenkins &#8220;<strong><em>Moonlight</em></strong>&#8221; being the only fourth-ever black Best Director nominee.</p>
<p>The 89th Academy Award &#8220;Oscars&#8221; to be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel will air live on ABC at 8:30pm ET on Feb. 26, 2017.</p>
