Brighton-based artist Emma Brownjohn was born in 1969. She received a first class degree from Camberwell College of Arts and has had a successful career showing her paintings across the globe. She says that mostly there are no defining features in her work. She wants them to be as universal as possible.

Emma Brownjohn avoids the heavy use of motif or painting anything that may point towards specific locations in an effort to make her work universal. She said, “I want the viewer to experience my world but also be transported to any city, sea, forest or field and enter his own realm of colour, memory, reality or dream”.

Her inspiration comes from many varied sources- red berries on a white winter’s day, orange leaves falling in autumn, a fluorescent jacket glimpsed amid the grey of the city or even a turquoise boat sailing in the ; sea. She wishes to paint the magic of the changing seasons with all the colours and shapes they bring along with themselves, busy streets with people moving helter-skelter and architectural variety, a beach full of vibrant colours of summer, the patterns and compositions created by the trees. She wants people to know the diversity and beauty of Planet Earth.

Her paintings depicted in urban settings capture fleeting moments vividly. Her paintings are mostly named around a natural element like – Between The Leaves, Magic Tree, Bridges In The Mist, Just Before The Rain, Noon Day, Dusk Walking, and many more.
