Imagine a world without art. How dull, how lifeless it would seem! Gone are the days when survival was the only thing the primitive human civilization cared about. Now we value talent, aesthetic beauty, and creative pleasure. Art drives us, inspires us, and makes us feel more alive. But what is it about art that subconsciously evokes such strong emotions in us? And how do artists use these techniques to create mind-blowing pieces? Read on to find out Emotional Paintings.

COLOR is primary (pun-intended)

Of course, the core of any good painting is its appropriate use of colors. Artists draw from color psychology to understand how we perceive colors, the visual effects of mixing, matching, and contrasting different colors, and the messages they are able to communicate. Even as non-artistic folks might know, the two categories of colors- warm (comfort, warmth, and hostility) and cool (calmness to sadness) – are capable of inducing a variety of emotions. For example, studies have found that looking at the color purple inspires creativity in us!

May God give us LIGHT

The use of lighting can completely alter the mood of a painting. In fact, we often use light as a metaphor for someone’s character, saying that cheerful people ‘light up the room’ or that sketchy ones are ‘dark characters’. Artists use such ideas associated with lighting to make us feel differently about the content of their artwork. Images flooded with light tend to convey a sense of joy, freedom, even clarity, while dim light makes us feel sad, or indicates some malignancy or mystery. The sharp contrast of dark and light, on the other hand, heightens the emotional intensity of a scene.

Wikimedia Commons / nQFyqKK8PYIYTA at Google Cultural Institute

Pictures such as this one, bring to mind a feeling of despair, with the small candlelight representing hope.

SYMBOLISM is the key

When artists can’t replicate some emotionally charged object from real life in their art, they use symbols to retain that emotion. When used in culturally appropriate ways, symbols can carry great meaning as metaphors. The symbols may be derived from the lifestyle, culture, or mythology of a society.

Wikimedia Commons / ;ISBN ;3860703528

For example, in this painting Jupiter et Sémélé by Gustave Moreau, a Roman myth is depicted. However, the artist uses the story of the myth as symbolic to the ultimate union of the human with the divine.

Art is as REAL as you are

Wikimedia Commons / oil on canvas – 122cm x 152cm

Using experiences, events, and emotions of real-life settings can go a long way in making the viewer form an emotional connection with the artwork. Realism in art has been used to engage people with depictions of the struggles of real life. When we feel that the artist empathetically understands us, we allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to experience emotions. According to artist Damien Mammoliti, artists should draw from real life events and expressions to create the character or setting in their art. Using certain narratives such as those of longing, childhood, nostalgia etc. can add extra sentimental value to art.

HIT them in the feels ;

This technique requires the artist to convey some sort of sensory disruption through their work. Yep, you heard that right. Sometimes it’s not about being subtle at all. Sometimes, you just gotta cause such empathic discomfort in the viewer that the negative emotion hits them vividly. Certain visuals of sensory interruptions or uncomfortable tactile sensations or placing things where they are most unwanted, the viewer experiences emotion intensely towards the subject matter. You can almost imagine it as a picture screaming at you ,”LOOK TA ME!”

Ooh! A STORY!

Art that looks pretty sure is attractive, but only holds our attention for brief periods. It is when the viewers get the opportunity to interpret it themselves and delve deeper into the lives of the characters and their backstory, that a more personalized connection is established. They are able to experience the things that those figures in the painting do, and remain curious about what the story is.

Wikimedia Commons / Théodore Géricault

The Raft Of Medusa, by Théodore Géricault, depicts a real, wrecking story of an event that real people suffered. The characters have experienced pain, starvation, and deterioration to the point of practicing cannibalism, and the horror shows through their faces. Such a visual representation of a terrifying event is powerful in causing us to feel fear, shock, and pain. ;
