<p class="has-text-align-justify">A huge amount of oxygen that we breathe comes from marine organisms and plants. It’s safe to say that we are breathing because of oceans. People are always concerned about oil spills in the oceans and hunters killing whales. But eating aquatic animals is affecting our environment too. Every year around 6, 50,000 whales, dolphins, seals, turtles are killed because of the fishing industry. This is obviously affecting our ecosystem very badly. Many alternatives are being suggested and are coming into practice around the world to prevent harm to animals. One of them is cell-based meat.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Cell-based meat or cultivated meat is basically taking a small biopsy of cells from an animal, which is pain free. ;</p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">Those cells are then taken and purified. They then multiply into a higher number, This process is called <em>proliferation</em>. ;</p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">Cells are fed nutrients inside a bioreactor, and then slowly these cells turn into tissues. The end product is cell-based meat which is just like the meat that we buy from the local market.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">There are over 30 companies around the world that are producing cell-based meat. One of them is Singapore-based Shiok Meats. In late November 2020, Shiok Meats launched the first cell-based lobster at an exclusive tasting event. They presented cell-based lobster in two delicious dishes; lobster gazpacho and lobster terrine. ;</p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">Shiok Meats launched a cell-based shrimp back in 2019. They are the first company to extract stem cells from lobsters, crabs and shrimps. The whole process of making cell-based or lab-grown meat takes about six or seven week to get ready, which is much faster than following than producing the ordinary seafood. The objective of Shiok meat is to provide a sustainable seafood future to the world. ; The company is planning to commercialize the shrimps by 2022.</p>
