<p class="has-text-align-justify">When the island of <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socotra">Socotra</a> in Yemen separated from mainland Arabia millions of years ago, curious things sprouted up. Even though we are familiar with trees endemic to certain regions of the world, 37% of plant species in Yemen&#8217;s Socotra island are not found anywhere else. One of these peculiar and extraordinary species is the <em>Dracaena cinnabari, </em>the Dragon Blood Tree that bleeds like we do.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">The tree is not wounded or hurt, so your little heart can be at peace. And the red pigment is not exactly blood, either. But it&#8217;s close resemblance to our blood has prompted this nickname. </p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">Unlike most tree species we have seen, the dragon blood tree has red sap or resin that makes the tree look like it&#8217;s bleeding. In reality, though, it is anything but. The dragon blood tree has been commercially important for a long time now – the &#8216;dragon blood&#8217; from the tree is used primarily for its medicinal value – apply a little sap on bites or rashes or wounds and you&#8217;re good to go. Let&#8217;s not forget to mention that the sap is especially famous in the world of cosmetics. The tree also produces tiny berries that are fed in small amounts to cattle and livestock because they&#8217;re rich in nutrients.</p>

<p>So many benefits from a tree that lives so far away?</p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">If you ever do visit the beautiful Yemen&#8217;s Socotra Archipelago, you can spot the tree in an instant. It looks like an umbrella, with thin leaves that are up to 60cm in length. Another giveaway is how the trunk of the tree &#8216;splits&#8217; when it flowers. However, if you don&#8217;t spot a large number, it&#8217;s because new inklings of the species have different shapes, thanks to climate change. Even though the dragonblood tree has been pretty resistant to Socotra island&#8217;s harsh weather, the continuously changing climate and lack of rainfall is causing the numbers of this tree to dwindle. ;</p>



<p class="has-text-align-justify">So we recommend packing your bags ASAP and leaving for Yemen. Now, now, we aren&#8217;t asking you to travel to Socotra just to watch this tree, though it&#8217;s reason enough. Socotra island is a UNESCO world heritage, and remains to date one of the most unspoiled islands in the world. Once you&#8217;ve spotted enough dragonblood trees, you can focus on the other tree species of this isolated island that you won&#8217;t find anywhere else in the world! Oh, and you&#8217;ll love the towering sand dunes and naturally deep canyons.</p>
