This 2017 Amazon Prime original show takes you into the seemingly perfect life of a housewife in the New York of the 1960s, when her domestic world takes some sharp turns and she discovers a new talent in herself: stand-up comedy. It’s not in any way a typical melodrama with the struggles of a divorced woman left without her husband. Sure, you see struggles, but they are those of a woman who is excited to make her own identity in the world with her talent. Needless to say, the show is a feminist piece to the core. But that’s not the only amazing thing about it. Read on to find out why <em>The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel </em>is a must-watch for anyone who can appreciate good art.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The protagonist is extremely relatable and human in her growth</h2>

Mrs. Maisel, or Midge, lives a life that revolves around her husband, and she’s happy with it. But when he decides to leave her (because of his own insecurities), we find her not desolate but free. She jumps right into her dream of realizing her potential and doesn’t give up. She isn’t perfect, and she realizes the hard way that she can’t just do comedy if she hasn’t prepared at all, but the process of her becoming more independent and self-realized is a treat to the eyes. Her failure makes her all the more realistic for us. Plus, she is naturally charismatic, funny, smart, and doesn’t back down from an argument, so you can’t help but love her.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The smallest subtleties cover the misogyny of that society</h2>

You can pick it out in the conversation between women and men in the show, jokes by some that are outrageously sexist and yet easily accepted, dialogues between Midge and her family that involve such oppressive sentiments and notions of gender roles which are made to seem natural in the scene. It’s almost disgusting to see such extreme things so normalized, but that’s the exact intention of the show makers- to bring out an unapologetic feminist icon in this utterly sexist society. The attention to detail in the script is noteworthy when it comes to this. ;</p>

It is from her ingeniously written lines that you can tell how perceptive, observant, and intelligent she is, even off the stage; once she actually gets to performing, witty words gush out of her mouth in a steady stream and suddenly she is commanding the whole crowd. ;</p>

You have blinding bright colors and soothing pastel colors, and don’t forget the powerful black stand-up garbs. Every single costume Midge wears, so perfectly tailor-made and crisp and complete with the glamour of the 50s, makes her a little more iconic than before- it’s not just about how beautiful she looks, but also about the wonders she is achieving in her radiant, power-woman clothes. ;</p>
