Captain Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers is the only living, successful test subject of the Super Soldier Serum developed by Abraham Erskine during World War II, after which the patriotic super soldier became known as Captain America. He fought against the Nazis and their rogue science division HYDRA until he went MIA during the war. After nearly seventy years of being frozen, Steve awoke in the 21st century and became the leader of the Avengers.

Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark was a billionaire industrialist and inventor. He was the former CEO of Stark Industries, a conglomerate originally started by his father, Howard Stark. While in Afghanistan, Tony was captured by Ten Rings, and was ordered to build the Jericho missile for them. Instead, he, along with Ho Yinsen, used their resources to build a suit of armor and make their escape. Returning to America, Tony improved his armor and became the armored superhero known as Iron Man. He is a founding member of the Avengers.

Thor Odinson is the Asgardian God of Thunder, superhero, self-proclaimed protector of Earth and the king of Asgard. Thor made a name for himself as the mightiest warrior on his homeworld and subsequently became well known for his actions on Earth, which included acting as a founding member of the Avengers. He is the son of Odin Borson and Frigga, and the adopted brother of Loki Laufeyson.

Dr. Robert Bruce Banner is a renowned scientist who specialises in the field of gamma radiation. Bruce is able to transform into the Hulk; whenever he is stressed, enraged or seriously injured; due to the fact that he was exposed to gamma radiation that genetically modified his DNA. After defeating the Abomination in Manhattan, Bruce attempted to seclude himself and control when he would turn into the Hulk. After being recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. to find the location of the Tesseract, he joined the fray during the Battle of New York and became a founding member of the Avengers.

Natalia Alianovna "Natasha" Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, was a former high-ranking agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. She was instructed by Nick Fury to assess the suitability of Tony Stark for the Avenger Initiative. The report she filed with S.H.I.E.L.D. found that Stark was unsuitable for it, but the Iron Man armor would be beneficial to the Initiative. She is a founding member of the Avengers and the only female founder of the group.

Clinton Francis "Clint" Barton, code name Hawkeye, is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and founding member of the Avengers. Clint has no real superpowers but is the world's greatest marksman armed with a recurve bow. After escaping Loki's mind-control, he joins the Battle of New York as a founding member of the Avengers. He reassembled with the team when Loki's Scepter was located. He also played a role in recruiting Wanda Maximoff and her brother, Pietro, to the Avengers. Clint left the Avengers after defeating Ultron in order to spend more time with his family.
