Battle of Oranges is actually a festival in Ivrea, north Italy. It is a tradition to throw oranges at various groups of people. It is actually the largest food fight in all of Italy and around. It ranges back to the time when in the 19th century, these oranges symbolized stone pelting at the king’s castle with the motive to demolish it.

You would wonder why oranges and not any other fruit when oranges don’t even grow in italian alps? Well, no one really knows why it is this way but trust me, the fun overshadows this question well. This battle of oranges is an yearly tradition that takes place from the Sunday of Carnival to Fat Tuesday with 3500+ participants from various teams (nine teams, to be particular). The festival consumes over 60,000 crates which is about 400 tons orange! These 400.000 kg of oranges are thrown and bombarded at rival teams but if you slip in, no one can save you from the fight!
It sounds way too much fun and competitive and spirited and I bet it definitely is! So, unleash your carnival spirits and check this festival out super soon and if you already have, tell us in the comments below!
