Your phone may be secretly listening to everything you talk about. That happens because smartphone voice assistants like “OK Google” require to know when to spring into action. To activate your phone’s voice assistant, all you need to do is to say wake words like “OK Google” or “Hey Google.” Then, your phone uses your audio starting with, or just before, the wake word and till you’ve completed your command.
Such interactions are made to improve the service. You can check out all of your Google Assistant commands by visiting “My Google Activity”. Then, click “Filter by date & product” and then choose the option that says “Voice & audio.”
While having a voice assistant at the ready has its pros, it understandably gives rise to privacy concerns for smartphone users. So, if you do not want your phone listening to you, disable the features that do it. You simply have to disable “Hey Google”, the Google search microphone, and audio monitoring while driving. Once you do this much, Google will no longer listen to whatever you say.
How to stop your Android device from listening to you by disabling the Google Assistant
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap “Google.”
- In the Services section, select “Account services.”
- Choose “Search, Assistant & Voice.”
- Tap “Voice.”
- In the Hey Google section, select “Voice Match.”
- Turn off “Hey Google” by swiping the button towards the left.
