2020 was a year of foldable smartphone space, similarly in 2021 we might see rollable smartphones. The rollable smartphones like Oppo X 2021 concept phone was recently unveiled. Interestingly, not just Oppo but companies like Samsung, LG and others have started working on it. Let’s take a look at how different brands have done in this space.
LG Slide
LG Rollable which could also be called LG Slide, is expected to launch in June 2021. The upcoming premium phone has a display that can give a tablet-like experience. The LG Rollable smartphone could also be priced at a whopping $2,359. It could come with a 7.4-inch rollable display.
Oppo X 2021
The Oppo X 2021 concept includes a feature to just press a slider on the side panel of the device to transform a regular smartphone into a tablet and vice versa. In the concept smartphone, the collapsed screen size is 6.7″ while the unfolded one is 7.4″ at maximum. The handset features three proprietary technologies of Oppo- the Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate, and self-developed Warp Track high-strength screen laminate.
Samsung’s Tri-fold
The yet-to-launch Samsung’s rollable smartphone will come with a horizontally expanding display, expandable from 6-inches to 8-inches. Samsung might become the first company to leave behind LG and Oppo in launching a rollable smartphone. The smartphone is likely to be called Galaxy Scroll and could be launched in 2021. One of the visuals shows a tri-fold display on a phone that could become similar to the original Galaxy Fold when folded.

Personally I really don’t think this technology will transcend. It’s just not practical to have a cellphone twice the size a regular one in your pocket just because it can adapt the any other size.
