This Blind Gamer Has A Knack For Winning Games While He’s Turned Away From The Screen!

Brice Mellen was like every other teenager when it came to his love for gaming. He could beat fellows easily, some friends refuse to sit down and lose. Soul Calibur 2, Mortal Kombat, and all those names known to teenagers from the 2000s, have been his speciality. Typical, yes?

But hold on, there’s one thing you should know – Brice is blind – has been since birth. Lever’s disease was the culprit, disabling his  optic nerves to connect to his brain. But that didn’t stop him, no. For years he has amazed people with his video-gaming, sometimes freaking them out for fun when he turns away from the screen to play, controller in hand.

When did it start, and how did he get so good?

Mellen admits humbly, that he doesn’t know how he does it. He just does. But his father tells another story.

He started playing when he was around 7, tried and tried, wasn’t as good as he is now, obviously, but he didn’t give up. After breaking countless remote controllers, memorizing key joystick operations, asking more questions than could be answered and focussing the most on audio signals and cues, he got so good that, back in 2005 when he was 17, he appeared in numerous articles, surprising everyone with his talent and hard-work. It’s obvious his progress wasn’t an overnight ordeal – it was slow, consistent and gradual.

Does he ask for help?

Rarely. And after the game starts, not at all! Once the controller is in his hand, the world of video games is his to conquer. What does he do when people challenge him

People his age have always thought they could beat him easily. They would come to DogTags Gaming Centre where he would hang out regularly.

A challenge? Can they beat him? He plays them easily, swiftly, scenes of violence flashing on the screen as his alter-ego beats his opponent’s. He’s so good that he gets bored of it. A humble smile with a hint of smugness adorns his mouth, confident in the person he’s grown to become. 🙂
