Have you ever marveled at the beauty of Daisy from The Great Gatsby? There is an evident charm in things past. The glamor of yester ages lives today in memories and artifacts that we cherish at homes, bought from painstakingly discovered antique shops and eBay stores. Thanks to vintage cosmetics, we can now honor with nostalgic remembrance the allure of times gone too soon.

Collecting vintage makeup and makeup packaging is not a new ‘hobby’; it has existed for a long time. But it is in the recent present that vintage cosmetics have flared up as an internet trend, with people all over the world showcasing their cherished past cosmetics, displaying their very personal ‘museums’ and acquainting the world with the magic in the lives of those who live in memory.
Perfume bottle dating back to the 1950s, by Chantyn.
You see, makeup wasn’t always ‘affordable’; considered for far too long a luxury, an indulgence, cosmetics and makeup were lovingly treasured by those of yesterday. Lipstick bullets, compact cases and mascara wands containers treated almost like jewels.
And a jewel is what this dusting powder is, by Giftique, dating back to 1975.
These riches are now being unearthed, revealed to the whole world – compact cases from the 1920s by luxury brands, tubes of lip colors from the 1930s that still stain the lips a rich red, adorable puffs and powders from the 1950s that smell still so fresh.
Fresh, and nostalgic of times that have long gone. Like this beautiful treasure – a ‘compact’ book.
The containers – bullets and cases and bottles and vessels are not earth-hating plastics like they are today. The delicately pleasing perfumes came in glass bottles, compacts in metal cases, dusting powders stored in porcelain, with soft puffs and lipsticks in tubes that secure the tints even today.
And porcelian doll puffs that still smush powder like they did half a decade ago.
Most of these vintage cosmetics have held up really well, a testament to the integrity of those years. While each decade has its own problems, its own struggles, these vintage cosmetics have reminded us that a thing of beauty is a joy forever.
