In the past, defensive buildings were erected in various locations surrounding cities to defend them. Forts are defense buildings that were utilized by every kingdom to defend itself. Forts were used to protect the borders of a kingdom or city by relying on the abilities of men and the strength of walls and doors. Here’s a list of 10 such historical forts. Just looking at their pictures isn’t enough, you need to scout them in person whenever you get the chance.
Malbork Castle and Fort
According to UNESCO the Malbork castle and fort is the largest castle by land in the world. This castle and the fort are situated in Poland and were built in the late 13th century. This castle was renovated many times but the main design of this castle is the same as when it was built for the first time. Malbork Castle was built by the Teutonic Order when it was separated from the great Prussian tribes. Nowadays this historical place may be a very interesting tourist point in Poland.
Bourtange Fort
The little town of Bourtange is nestled within this stunning Dutch fortress, which was erected in the 16th century. The fort was decommissioned by the Netherlands in 1851, and the region became a typical, charming Dutch town, but in the mid-twentieth century, the local government renovated it to boost tourism. And why shouldn’t they? The geometric rivers and embankments are enthralling.
Alcázar of Toledo
The Alcázar of Toledo has a lengthy history, having served as a Roman palace in the third century and more recently as a focal point during the Spanish Civil War. The structure became known as a powerful emblem of Spanish nationalism as a result of dramatic occurrences throughout the conflict. The stronghold has been meticulously restored and is now a museum and library.
Belogradchik Fortress
The Belogradchik Fortress is one of the world-famous Belogradchik Rocks. The Fortress, which goes back to Roman times, is a popular tourist destination today, along with the Belogradchik Rocks. The Fortress of Belogradchik is located in northwest Bulgaria, near the town of Belogradchik. Both the Fortress and the Rocks are spectacular, with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Other wonderful sites to explore in the region include the Magura cave, which is one of the country’s largest caverns.
Galle Fort
Galle fort, also in Sri Lanka, was erected by the coast in the 16th century to protect the Galle from warships. This lovely fort was erected during the golden period of the Portuguese. This fort has also been restored several times, although the construction and overall appearance of the fort remain the same as when it was initially erected.
Fort McHenry
This American star fort, built in 1798, is most recognized for its involvement in the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from a British fleet invasion. The fort was continually utilized by the United States military troops during World War I, and it was designated a national monument in 1939.
The Tower of London
The words “sent to the Tower” would have struck dread into the heart of every medieval Englishman, for the Tower was not just a castle and royal dwelling, but also a gruesome jail. A few people have been executed here, possibly the most notable of whom being Anne Boleyn. The White Tower, commissioned by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century, serves as the focal point.
Masada Fort
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located on the eastern border of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea, on the summit of a rock plateau akin to a mesa. It was erected between 37 and 31 BCE by Herod the Great, and according to legend, the families and troops who lived there committed mass suicide when it became obvious that they could not withstand the Roman Empire’s siege. It’s a fantastic experience, and the scenery is breathtaking!
Citadel of Aleppo
This stronghold and castle, which is located in Syria, is also one of the largest and oldest forts in the world. The Citadel of Aleppo was also constructed during the great Ottoman period in the 12th century. This stronghold is currently in disrepair and has been largely damaged. The Citadel of Aleppo is a popular tourist destination for those who enjoy seeing ancient sites.
Amber Fort
Any mention of historical forts is incomplete without rich Indian history and the country’s forts.. Amber Fort seems like a mirage in the parched landscape, its massive walls and towers concealing some of India’s most elaborately stunning architecture. Above the palace, you can see defense walls weaving their way across the desolate hills. Amber Fort was constructed in the late 1500s and has been meticulously restored. There are a plethora of additional great locations to see in and around Jaipur, making it a must-see on most people’s India itinerary.
