Mobile gaming has seen an upsurge in recent years. Many Esports events and tournaments are being held for mobile games. The professional gamers are always looking for a device which can complement their gaming abilities and provide them the perfect support that they are looking for from a gaming smartphone. There are many companies which have lineups specially for gaming centric devices and products ROG (Republic Of Gamers) by Asus, Legion by Lenovo and Black Shark by Xiaomi are some examples. The current top and best gaming smartphones that you can get are the Lenovo Legion Duel 2 and the ROG Phone 5.
We would be comparing both of the gaming beasts in different terms, so you can get the idea which one is the ideal choice for you.
The Lenovo Legion duel 2 has dimensions of 176×78.5×9.9 mm (12.56mm at centre) and weighs 259 grams.
Dimensions of the ROG 5 are 173×77×9.9 mm and a weight of 239 grams.
The ROG 5 is lighter in weight which is a plus point as it helps in playing games for a long time. The Legion on the hand has a wider display, the thickness of both the phones is equal but the Legion is thicker in the middle due to the logo, Cooling Fan and the exhaust pumps.
When you look at the Lenovo Legion Duel 2, you can clearly say it is not like the usual smartphones. The design has not been compromised by the company for day to day or regular smartphone uses. The design of the smartphone is completely gaming centric. The device is in landscape form, even the front camera is not on the top like usual smartphones, it is at the horizontal top position. This makes it easier for the gamers to do live streams while playing the game. There is a bump in the rear middle portion of the device, this bump has the processor, cooling mechanism and the logo. The phone has 2 touch triggers at the top and 2 at the rear. There are a total of 8 external trigger options and 200 configurations for them.
The ROG 5 on the other hand boasts its dot display which is at the rear position of the device. The dot display can change the colours and display some animations. The device also has air triggers at the side and the rear position. It also offers customisable motion gestures.
This is a very important aspect for the gamers not only the display quality but the refresh rate and the touch response have a crucial role while playing games.
In terms of display both of the devices have their own plus points.
The legion duel 2 has a 6.92 inches, AMOLED, 2460×1080 pixels display with a refresh rate of 144Hz and an amazing touch response rate of 720Hz.
The ROG has 6.78 inches, AMOLED, 2448×1080 pixels display with a refresh rate of 144Hz. The device features the lowest latency rate in any smartphone with touch response rate of 300Hz.
Both the devices have a similar display as both support HDR10+, the brightness of Legion is a bit brighter being at 1300nits(peak) and ROG has 1200 nits(peak).
Hardware ( Processor, Battery, RAM and Charging Speed)
The Legion Duel 2 has Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and comes in different RAM variants from 12 to 18 GB. The battery capacity is of 5500mAh and is capable of 90W fast charging using 2 data cables included in the box.

The ROG 5 phone has SD 888 processor, and RAM options of 8 to 18GB. The phone has a battery of 6000 mAh and supports 65W charging. The performance is similar in both the devices because of the same processor, but depending on the RAM size some differences can be observed. The ROG phone has a bigger battery but has slower charging than the Legion. The special feature is that the ROG phone has a pin by which you can attach different accessories including a cooling fan.
Though Both the phones have stereo front facing dual speakers and quad microphones for noise cancellation.
Although Camera is not a deciding factor for the gaming devices both the ROG and Legion have great camera specs.
Legion has dual rear cameras of 64 Mp and 16 Mp having aperture of f/1.9 and f/2.2 respectively. The front camera is 44 Mp.
The Legion phone has a camera at the centre of the device on the rear side and the pop up selfie camera is also at top of the phone at centre in landscape form. This allows the gamers to game conveniently even when using the camera. There are some special options available in front cameras for streaming online .
The ROG on the other hand has a triple rare camera, 64 Mp f/1.8, 13 Mp f/2.4 wide angle and 5 Mp macro camera. The selfie camera is 24 Mp. ROG phone’s camera are not designed for streaming. The front camera is on the bezels and the rear camera is also normally placed. Basically you can’t stream through ROG when playing games.
Design is observably different devices. Legion definitely has an edge in terms of design for a gaming smartphone. The company made this design to help gamers in streaming and allow them to use cameras while gaming. Also the advanced cooling system needed a place .
ROG on the other hand has a more conventional design. The in built cooling system is not that great but you can add using the POGO pin.
The performance is similar in both the devices but Legion has an edge due to cooling system and response rate.
So, you need to consider the fact that with Legion you will not be able to perform day to day tasks that easily due to its design and the camera positioning. The ROG on the other hand can be a daily driver or a gaming beat as per the requirements.
