You know how back in the day when we were kids (for those of us reading this who aren’t anymore biologically), we’d always fantasize about being Superman? Tying a long red fabric around our necks and swooping down at the most our sofa sets?
Well. There are people who actually carried that fantasy all the way to their adulthood. And built planes out of the childhood dreams. Nothing fancy, just your neighbourhood plane without a cabin.
For the uninitiated, USA-based EAA – Experimental Aircraft Association is an organisation formed in 1953 for aviation enthusiasts. Harrison Ford’s a member, by what the official website claims. Well, this one ain’t no tea-time club then.
Anyway, everywhere for about a week, the EAA organises a summer camp, so to speak or what they call, ‘World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration’. The EAA AirVenture at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Except this summer camp has got to do with all aviation-related fun and frolic. Enthusiasts numbering in close to 500,000 from 80 countries descend into the Wittman Regional Airport to celebrate their common love of flights and flying. Made complete with aircrafts being flown around, aerobatics, pyrotechnics, workshops, demonstrations, film screenings and what not.
And this video that we stumbled upon was an exhibit at the 2019 edition of the AirVenture where the pilot seems to have simply been strapped onto the aircraft. No cabin, so cabin service. And no red cape too.
The 2021 edition seems equally thrilling and pumped up. Well, it makes me want to take to flights and flying.
