We love our chocolate and we love our noodles. But do we dare to love them when they come together? Well, no need to strain your imagination because Japanese restaurants have already executed this idea and it seems to be a hit!

Whatever Japan does, it does with a bang. For instance, a Valentine’s day favorite is, of course, chocolate in its various shapes and colors. But the boring old chocolate hearts and bars just don’t have the same appeal anymore. So why not surprise your partner with a bowl of sweet/savory ramen, but with a chocolatey twist! Noodles are a blank canvas, and they have been experimented on with different flavors endlessly. Tokyo’s ramen chefs are using this to their advantage and incorporating cacao in their dishes for a little adventure!
The Japan-based chain Kourakuen opened their restaurants to ramen lovers by offering a limited, Valentine’s special, chocolate-ramen bowl, with a soy sauce and cacao butter broth as well as a side of a whole chocolate bar!
A Michelin-starred lamb ramen restaurant by the name Mensho Tokyo also jumped on the trend and served up a more traditional style ramen bowl topped with chocolate shavings, offering a true contrast between spicy and sweet.
This aesthetically pleasing dish goes the extra mile in bringing all sorts of sweet elements to a ramen bowl. Kipposhi, a restaurant in Shibuya, offers this ‘Pink Valentine Ramen’, topped with the goodness of strawberry, whipped cream, and a pink chocolate bar. It’s kind of a secret menu item, so you might have to ask for it especially!
Already known for their bizarre pineapple ramen, Papapapine might’ve gone slightly bonkers with this fruit and chocolate noodle dish (that’s WAY too many elements in one bowl). Their special broth is 40% pineapple juice and you’ll find sweet and spicy chocolate dan-dan noodles swimming in it.
Ramen Chef Keizo Shimamoto, the man behind the Ramen Shack (USA), and the inventor of the ‘ramen burger’, is alo not far behind in this creative challenge!
As you can guess, people have mixed emotions about this combination. Those who like dipping chips and fries in ice cream are pretty interested in the idea, but others who believe that savory and sweet are different for a reason might not be amused by it. What do you think?
