The fear of public speaking (also known as glossophobia) is found to be greater than the fear of death in most people. This being said, this has the potential of spoiling your professional and personal life. You feel jittery, your palms sweat, your stomach ties itself into knots. Overcome this fear of oral presentations with these simple tips!
Watch yourself in the mirror
Practice your role in front of the mirror, imagine yourself speaking directly in front of the audience. Pay attention to your facial expressions, gestures, body movements, how welcoming you sound. As soon as you master the art of gentle expressions and a calm demeanour, you will sound more welcoming to your audience.
Work on your breathing
When you start focusing on your breathing, your voice will have more resonance and you will relax. Breathe calmly and try to get into a rhythm. Although it is a public speaking exercise, breath-work always helps reduce stress and improve clarity in all walks of life.
Record yourself and learn your voice
Record your speech on your phone. Record yourself delivering the speech from beginning to end. Then listen to it and pen down how you could make it better. Most of us do not like listening to the sound of our voice on tape. Thus, it is important to get used to your speaking style and accent.
Get organized
When all of your thoughts and materials are organised, you become much more relaxed and calm. When you have organized, clear thoughts, your speaking anxiety is considerably reduced because then you are able to focus on the thing at hand, giving a great speech.
Sip water that’s warm or room temperature
Sometimes squeezing some lemons into your water can help. It lubricates your throat. Avoid sugary beverages before a speech. These dry out your mouth, making it harder to communicate.
