Makeup is something that fascinates me to no end. Contrary to some people’s ridiculous belief that putting on makeup makes one fake and shallow, it is as much a form of art as is painting or sculpture; it just uses the expressive human face as its canvas.

On one hand, you have the subtle enhancement of facial features to appear more attractive, and on the other hand, there is the extreme, unbelievably creative experimentation with colors and products. It is so inspiring and delightful to see people who are skilled in makeup and all its nuances transform a simple face into a masterpiece that tells thousands of stories.
Viral makeup artist Mimi Choi, who grew up in Macau and now lives in Vancouver, is one such artist. She draws inspiration from her graphic sleep paralysis to create mind-bending optical illusions on her face. You almost wouldn’t believe that she learned to recreate the depth and dimension of real objects so expertly through mundane trial and error.
She explains that she used makeup as a refuge and a form of self-expression during her incredibly competitive and stressful childhood. She switched from a pre-school teacher job to her true passion, and soon enough, her talent was recognized by the Internet.
She chose optical illusion makeup because she finds it satisfying to see an imagined look come alive on her or her model’s face, and she also savors the confused and amazed reactions people have to her work. This colorful and intricate mosaic look was based on the Portuguese-inspired artwork on the pavements of her hometown, Macau. We’ve never seen cultural beauty so expertly represented on a face!
She has been conducting a specialized Masterclass + Workshop in many places. You can check out her Instagram for more such awe-inspiring artworks!
