Vibrant Purple Tomatoes Are Now The Talk Of The Town!

The internet is loving a new genetically-modified fruit, and its reasons are well and valid. Purple tomatoes might be the answer to many of our health woes – the USDA has approved them, and their blueberry-like color simply means blueberry-like benefits. Even though this purple tomato looks pretty much the work of photoshop at first glance, we assure you, it’s very real, and the world has its hopes up high when it comes to the marvelous benefits the tom-tom will provide. But how can a simple change in color do that? Let’s find out.

While purple tomato got the green light by USDA only this year, it has been tested for the last 14 years! Back in 2008, European scientists modified a tomato using the DNA  of a snapdragon flower. Result? A strikingly vibrant purple tomato rich in anthocyanins. While the anthocyanins provide the deep color, the hue isn’t all they’re good for. This pigment, also found in blueberries and cranberries, has a protective effect on our skin and organs. The antioxidant properties of the purple tomato make it an ideal choice for all of us health junkies.

But that’s not it. Studies show that GM purple tomato also has anti-inflammatory effects and can help in age-related degeneration. It can help with not only obesity but also with type 2 diabetes, and even cancer! These genetically -modified tomatoes will also help in maintaining cardiovascular health, an increasing concern among us.

If you’re wondering whether these fruits that look a little like beets also taste so, let us tell you that they don’t. Purple tomatoes taste pretty much like red tomatoes; only, with an augmented astringent taste.

The biting irony is that purple tomatoes remain to be approved in their home country, the UK. However, you can expect these violet beauties to hit American shelves soon. Seeing as they have double the shelf life of red tomatoes, we are hoping these healthy fruits will make an ideal choice. And if you’re into gardening, rest assured, seeds will be distributed soon, too!
