Sounds like a perfect summer treat doesn’t it? Well after reading this article you will realise how wrong you were if you read the title and thought we were referring to a popsicle flavour or an ice candy to beat the summer heat.
Though not a summer cooler dessert, watermelon snow is certainly a summer consequence. As the sun shines over the winter leftover snow, the snow begins to melt. Due to the melting snow, there is a particular type of algae that thrives in this combination of freezing temperature and water. This alga needs light, warmth and water to grow.
The alga is called Chlamydomonas nivalis and causes the snow to change its colour. it is mostly found in the Sierra Nevada of California. In cold temperatures, the alga goes way under the snow. However, warmer temperature allows them to come a little further above and be revealed. Though not extremely dangerous in small quantities, consumption of large quantities of pink snow can be fatal!
While this snow looks extremely beautiful, the colour of the snow makes it melt much faster. This is because the snow now absorbs more heat than reflecting it.
Another fun fact is that stamping this snow releases a pink pulp which leaves colour on your shoes. It is even said that the watermelon snow has a fruity smell to it, as if the name and the looks weren’t tempting enough!
