The availability of Netflix has made a significant change in our entertainment experience of watching movies and TV shows. Money Heist

Country of Origin: Spain

This Spanish action crime mystery series premiered in 2017 is currently the talk of the town. The plot of the series revolves around a group of robbers assigned with the task of stealing buildings by occupying them, on behalf of a nameless boss, the Professor. The series has similarities with films Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Baby Driver (2017) but has established a prime space among global fan-base by now. Season 4 of the series has been released this year, and the fans are expecting a Season 5. When asked whether the show will be revived for a new season, Money Heist creator Alex Pina had an interesting reply, “Someone knows there will be a fifth season, but we don’t.”

Kingdom

Country of Origin: South Korea

The South Korean political period horror-thriller series, created by Kim Eun-hee, is Netflix’s first original Korean series and one of the best Netflix horror series. The series is adapted from the webcomic series, The Kingdom of the Gods, authored by Kim Eun-hee and drawn by Yang Kyung-il. The show is set in the 1500s of Joseon Korea, where a mysterious plague overtakes the land. While strange rumors spread about the ill king, the crown prince becomes the only home against the pandemic. The show is an epic zombie drama with massive battle scenes amidst the striking scenery, royal politics, class warfare, and a sword-swinging army against the legions of undead.

Fauda

Country of Origin: Israel

The Israeli series Fauda is created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff based on their experiences in the Israel Defense Forces. The show, which starts off a bit slow, quickly evolves as an intense thriller similar to shows like ’24’ and ‘Strike Back’.  The show follows a top agent of the Israeli Defense Force who comes out of retirement to hunt for his last target, a Palestinian fighter, whom he thought he had killed. Fauda is a gritty and fast-paced thriller with outstanding action, wonderful acting and the moral complexity of both the characters and the situation that its more simplistic American counterparts often lack.

Elite

Country of Origin: Spain

The Spanish thriller teen drama series created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona focuses on three working-class teens who are enrolled in an exclusive private high school in Spain. The clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder. The juicy murder mystery throughout the entire season, obscene displays of wealth, and lots and lots of sex made the show surprise hit when it was premiered on Netflix in 2018. Elite is a soapy whodunit with issue-based side plots and deals with topics like class inequality, xenophobia, and the stigma of HIV

Dark

Country of Origin: Germany

This Netflix series, that premiered in December 2017, has been described as “a hard to watch, and impossible to stop watching” Netflix series. Dark is Netflix’s first original German series that is dark with full of relationship cheats, scary killings and ugly secrets. The series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese is meant to be watched late at night, with the lights off, for a ghost story experience. Dark has been noted for its many similarities with the 1990s TV series Twin Peaks and the 2016 Netflix series Stranger Things.

Sacred Games

Country of Origin: India

The first Netflix Original series in India, which premiered in July 2018, is one of the most anticipated series. The thriller series revolves around a troubled Mumbai Police inspector who shares a common link with a fugitive gang boss who is determined to drive the city to destruction. His cryptic warning spurs the Police officer on a quest to save Mumbai from cataclysm. The series, whose second season released in August 2019, ended with a cliffhanger, leaving the fans of the show with the hope for a Season 3 in 2020.

Samurai Gourmet

Country of Origin: Japan

The Japanese-language web series is based on Masayuki Kusumi’s essay and the manga of the same title. Samurai Gourmet is ideal for those who want to watch a show without any drama, intricate plotlines or confusing character relationships. This is a simple and joyful food show that you will not want to take your eyes off. The show follows an older man who has just retired from his job as he starts exploring how the enjoyment of food can change depending on the setting, the emotions, and the people you’re with. While wandering his town, tasting dishes at different lunch spots and grabbing beers at izakaya pubs, a samurai from the 17th century appears as his alter ego and inspires him to be bolder and live life more fully.
