Do You Know What The Pantone Colour Of The Year 2020 Is?

It has become an annual tradition that on the first days of December, The Pantone Colour Institute announces the new Colour of the Year.

But how exactly did this practice start? And what is the purpose of having a Colour of the Year? We break it down for you here.

The Pantone Colour Matching System

The Pantone Colour System is the most significant colour matching system in the world! The system was invented in 1963 to solve the problem of complex colour matching in the printing industry.

Soon after, Pantone became the simplest and easiest way to categorize, communicate and match colours with the use of a colour catalogue in the now familiar fan format. Because of this, for over 40 years now, Pantone has been the go-to colour matching system not only for the design industry but also plastic, paint and textile manufacturers.

The Pantone Colour of the Year

In 2000, the Pantone Colour Institute introduced the Colour of the Year as an influential idea for the marketing, branding, and creative society as a whole. It turned out to be a revolutionary concept!

It is not surprising then that The Pantone Colour of the Year is awaited with much anticipation and excitement come December. And for 2020, the Pantone Colour of the Year is…

Classic Blue 19-4052

As we enter a whole new decade, the arrival of Classic Blue imparts a sense of reassurance and depenability. This deep blue is elegant, timeless and of course, classic!

Apparently that was exactly the idea for Pantone – to have a colour that stands out but is also reassuring familiar.

Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute, spoke to TIME magazine and said “It’s a reassuring blue, full of calm and confidence. It builds connection.”

Pressman is on point as Classic Blue is colour that highlights trustworthiness, dependability, constancy, and credibility which are all traits that are valued in the high-stress, fast-paced professional situations of the current world.

Undeniably, the colour seems fitting for this moment in history – the hue is for all genders and season, making it both desirable and accessible, for people from all walks of life. Moreover, this particular indigo shade can be obtained naturally from plants and dyes, which makes it a colour that aligns well with the sustainability movement!

We hope you have a classic blue 2020!
