La’eeb, FIFA and Qatar’s new creation, is floating into our lives. The ‘spooky figure’ is the official mascot for FIFA World Cup 2022 and has managed to just as glibly slide into our hearts. What La’eeb is has been left to the viewer’s interpretation. The figure has been termed as a ‘…thing’; mind you, the pronouns have been made clear. La’eeb prefers to be referred to as he/him. The creature hails from another world, a parallel universe, termed by both the agencies as the ‘mascot universe’.

But what do creatures of the mascot Universe look like?
At least the species La’eeb belongs to appears like a keffiyeh – the headdress that protects a wearer from dust, sun, and wind. This headdress is held in place by a black cord at the top. Notably, the piece of cloth is floating with La’eeb, because the creature the keffiyeh covers is without form. This has prompted people to joke that the official mascot for FIFA World Cup 2022 is, in fact, a blanket.
The ‘alien’, belonging to another universe, seems to look lively and playful. FIFA has said in a statement that La’eeb will be known for his youthful spirit; spreading joy and confidence everywhere he goes. The figure comes from a parallel world where tournament mascots live. It is a world where ideas and creativity form the basis of characters that live in the minds of everyone.
La’eeb can be a figment of your imagination. He is whoever a football fan wants him to be.
The football associations have also revealed that the name of their official mascot means a ‘super-skilled player’. And that he is!
The mascot has secured his own fanbass on the internet. Some users claim he is a ghost after all – of Casper, of an Arabian man… of Saddam Hussain!
Are you a little fuzzy inside, or a little spooked?
