Ingenious Gen-Z Comes Up With Coin Noodling, Vexes Banks

Let’s not deny it – we have all wanted to make easy money, coming up with elaborate, slightly diabolical plans during those sleepless nights. While many among us have veered towards investment, some of us have taken to antiques. Now, we all know that old currency can sell for more than its intended value, sometimes exponentially. But have you ever tried to milk this fact? Aussie teens who run the social media account ‘Gold Coast Picker‘ have shown the world the art of coin noodling, aka the rare coin-collection trend that can help you make a small(sometimes large) fortune.

In the video that went viral across platforms, the teens can be seen at an ATM, depositing notes worth $1,100, and exchanging it for coins – primarily gold, and some silver. As rolls of coins come out, they have to bring a trash bag to collect them. Thereafter, they scan through these coins to find any that would be worth $2 or more – some rare coins can sell for a much higher amount than their true value. After sorting through the coins for the rare ones, the teens get the rest exchanged from a bank for notes. They then sell these rare coins through eBay, and make a fortune.

Needless to say, many have rushed to ATMd after finding out about this ‘risk-free investment ‘, as the social media handle labels it. Banks, however, are furious, and they aren’t the only ones. People across the world have come forward to shame this simple money minting activity, surprised as the ingenuity of Gen-Z, something that will always baffle those who lived during simpler times.

However, let’s not forget that the Queensland-based teens aren’t exactly wasting the bank’s time as long as they’re not in the banks sorting through their simple coin-noodling treasure.

Sifting through thousands of coins is taxing if you consider the time factor, but they did get a profit that accounted to more than $100 for a $1,100 ‘investment’.

  1. The irony of this is that the most common ‘profit’ coin is called a ‘poppy’, and Australia suffers from ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’
