The Oscars of the music world – The Grammys and the nominations for 2019 are out! Here’s a quick breakdown of all the nominations in some popular categories aka The Big Four.
Record of the Year
“Hey, Ma” – Bon Iver.
“Bad Guy” – Billie Eilish.
“7 Rings” – Ariana Grande.
“Hard Place” – H.E.R.
“Talk” – Khalid.
“Old Town Road” – Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus.
“Truth Hurts” – Lizzo.
“Sunflower” – Post Malone & Swae Lee.
This is the second time that the Grammys have had eight nominees in each of the famed ‘Big Four” categories. But who among the eight have the best chance at getting their hands on the award?
Grande’s “7 Rings” could appeal to the Academy’s adult voters, largely for the way it brought the 60-year old show tune “My Favorite Things” from ‘The Sound of Music’ into the streaming era.
Lil Nas X got a lot of attention for setting a new, all-time record for most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. He also made the news for coming out as gay around the same time. ‘Old Town Road’ has also been nominated for Best Music Video, but can that guarantee a win for this new artist?
Another close contender is Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.” If she wins the award, it will make the song the second hip-hop smash in a row to win the top award.
Album Of The Year
“i,i ”— Bon Iver.
“Norman F—– Rockwell!” — Lana Del Rey.
“When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” — Billie Eilish.
“thank u, next” — Ariana Grande.
“I Used To Know Her” — H.E.R.
“7″ — Lil Nas X.
“Cuz I Love You (Deluxe)” — Lizzo.
“Father Of The Bride” — Vampire Weekend.
Though a fan favourite and one of the biggest mainstream artists on this list, Lana Del Rey’s album was passed over for a nomination for best pop vocal album, a possible sign that she might not bag this award.
Vampire Weekend and Bon Iver may split the vote between fans of Rock and Alternative genres.
Eilish’s album sat firm for three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, more than any of the other nominees. With this, When We All Fall Asleep… is contending to become the first debut album to win album of the year since Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me in 2002.
Eilish will make history if she wins as she would become the youngest album of the year winner in Grammy history! The record is currently held by Taylor Swift who was 20 when she won nearly 10 years ago for Fearless.
Best New Artist
Black Pumas
Billie Eilish
Lil Nas X
Lizzo
Maggie Rogers
Rosalia
Tank and the Bangas
Yola
Rosalía is the first artist to be nominated for best new artist for album that is not in English! She is also the first artist to be nominated for best new artist at both the Latin Grammys and The Grammys two years ago.
Eilish outdid Lizzo in this category at two major awards shows leading up to the Grammy’s showdown: First, at the VMAs on Aug. 26 and second, at the American Music Awards on Nov. 24. BUT Lizzo has exploded in the past few months, making this a toss-up. Grammy voters may favour Lizzo more due to her unforgettable personality and an instant star-like quality.
Song of the Year
“Always Remember Us This Way” — Lady Gaga.
“Bad Guy” — Billie Eilish.
“Bring My Flowers Now” — Brandi Carlile.
“Hard Place” — H.E.R.“Lover” — Taylor Swift.
“Norman F—— Rockwell” — Lana Del Rey.
“Someone You Love” — Lewis Capaldi.
“Truth Hurts” — Lizzo.
Among the frontrunners, this is Taylor Swift’s fourth nomination in this category. She is yet to win! On the other hand, “Someone You Love” by Capaldi is the kind of traditional ballad that the Grammys has long favored in this category.
If Eilish bags this one, she will be the youngest winner in this category since Lorde, who was a year younger (17!) when she won the award for co-writing “Royals” in 2013.
