7 Design Trends To Watch In 2017

A lot of predictions were made at the start of the year, however, only a few of them could stand the test of time. While we were still debating about minimalism and parallax, 2016 surprised us with the return of some old timers. Here we have compiled a list of design trends which we believe would have an impact on a large part of the next year.

MODERN-RETRO DESIGN

Retro typefaces and colour pallets are making a comeback with some modern flare. A lot many brands are looking back, to look different. This style is increasingly getting popular for its ability to stop people from scrolling through their (news) feed with its asymmetrical designs, to look and read.

RESPONSIVE LOGOS

With an emergence of different screen-sizes and formats, there was a rush amongst web designers to look for sustainable, platform agnostic designs. While responsive design beat adaptive to the title, responsive logos are now increasingly adding to the versatility of the design and user experience.

CARD BASED DESIGN

Popularized by Pinterest and later adopted both by Facebook and Twitter, container style user interface elements have increasingly gained in popularity, owing largely to their usability in responsive designs. Designers are now free to go about their work without having to make changes in visual concepts for each element as card based designs can match any interface.

ILLUSTRATED IMAGES

Strangely enough with all the filters available for photographs, there is one trend that is really catching the eye of digital-savvy consumers – Illustration. Towards the end of the year, we have seen a rise in the number of illustrated images which add the human element to any (mechanical looking) graphic design or photograph. They are increasingly being used in advertisements, explainer videos and instruction manuals.

DRAMATIC TYPOGRAPHY

With so many changes in design, somehow typography has always managed to find a way to stay in vogue. This year we saw typography get bigger, better, and bolder as it was used with photographs, illustrations, and every other piece of design to make a statement.

BOLD AND BRIGHT COLOURS

The colours are here to make an impact and increase visual recall. Only this year, they have gotten bolder and brighter. Even though it was expected that with the return of the Retro-Modern designs the colours pallets too will see a shift in use, but the way they have caught the fancy of designers from graphics to fashion and interiors, was something unexpected. If Pantone’s Fall-2016 colour report is an indication of the trend, then we believe that the colours will only get zestier.

CINEMAGRAPHS
Like GIF, only better

While clients were still obsessing about GIFs, the internet slowly moved on to something classier – Cinemagraphs. They are live photos made up of a still photograph and a small element which moves, normally repeating itself. Even though we can already see them everywhere from TV commercials to digital billboards, we have a feeling that we will see more of them in 2017.
