Donkey nannies- A practice to carry li’l lambs safely
Donkey nannies are used by a number of Italian shepherds to move their livestock safely from one place to another. This is especially for young lambs that cannot hike so much on their own.
These shepherds provide side saddles with little pockets for the lambs to fit into. My heart!. Well, it’s okay to adore these images of little-little lambs peeping out, for however long you want to. The saddles are made such that donkey nannies can carry multiple lambs at a time.
Why and how does the movement take place?
Where in Italy, though?
This method is used in the region of Lombardy, Italy during spring so as to transport lambs from the Alpine hills to the plains for grazing. Lambs are generally born during spring, which means that they are really young when the moving takes place.
During the rest stops, the lambs are taken to their mothers for feeding and nuzzling. After the babies are fed, Italian donkey nannies take over!
Other Animals used as Nannies
Some reports suggest that hinnies (half horse, half donkey) and mules can also be used in a similar manner. In the 1800s, Pit Bulls were used as nanny dogs. Nanny dogs are basically dogs which are great with children. They show a peculiar affection for children and understand their vulnerability.
