Have you ever heard the term ‘Planimeter’? No? Well, have you heard of the term ‘mouse’? I mean, of course, you have. However, I’m not talking about the animal, I’m talking about that little device that we use along with our computer. Have you ever stopped and wondered why is a computer mouse called a mouse? No, or yes, whatever your answer might be, it still will be nowhere near to the shocking-point that this idea about the basic structure of a mouse was originated from a device called ‘planimeter’! Yes, the difference between the names is implacable.

The very first design of the mouse had a rolling wheel which was designed by Doug Engelbart in 1963. You might be surprised to know that the story of the mouse being called a mouse is not very complex, in fact, the simplicity of the very reason behind this naming is the most beautiful part of this very brief story.
When Doug Engelbart was asked why did he name an invention so important, after a mouse? His answer was as simple as 2+2. According to him, the device looked like a mouse due to which this name looked perfect! Yes, you heard that correct, the device with a little cord was similar to a tail while the entire structure of the device, which basically was small and mouse-like, was the reason why we ended up having a ‘mouse’ as an integral part of our computer system!

I know the more you hear the more it sounds like one of the most ordinary rounds of a Q&A with just one question but the fact that someone can name an invention like this on the basis of its looks is beyond the creativity of an ordinary mind.
Well, now you know why we have a ‘mouse’ with us, so, go on tell your friends, give them a chance to guess and then let them get shocked like you and I were when we got the answer, right?
