Couturier and artist Michaela Stark has sparked as much controversy on Instagram as body positivity. The Brisbane-born, London-based lingerie designer specializes in creating custom lingerie pieces that sculpt and distort the body all the same. The artist creates self-portraits – collaborating with photographers – and displays them on her social media handle. In the displays, almost an exhibition of her work on herself, Michaela can be seen posing in her own creations – lingerie made of hand dyed silk taffeta, silk organza, silk chiffon and invisible tulle.

The peekaboo panels in the delicate brasserie, the ‘tight’ inner wear that lets breasts, hips and stomach spill, the body morphing techniques that allow her to create abstract human sculptures out of herself – sculptures that look undeniably nauseating to the point of passing out have made Michaela admit she thinks she has a fetiah for pain. Through her pieces and her self portraits, Michaela Stark has not blended into the fashion world, but has made it turn around to accommodate her art. She has been the designer for Beyonce and has worked with other big names in the industry.
While the relationship between the human flesh and its disfiguration, scratch that, true revelation, can get unsettling, thanks to body dysmorphia, Stark’s work has been received with open arms on Instagram. She hears often of how her work has led to a change in someone’s perspective; how, instead of hiding what lies beneath, her self portraits have prompted acceptance and confidence.
Let’s have a look at some of Stark’s projects, designs and self portraits to understand the true revolutionary essence of her work.
Are you getting a little uncomfortable?
Michaela admits she used to wear a bra size 32/34DD. Because her breasts were larger than her friends’, she would not find clothes that fit perfectly.
Now a rising star in a revolutionary world, Michaela has been able to force us to stop and reconsider our perspectives.
Stark works for hours and hours on a single piece to create the perfect result. As her work gets more creative, the world has no choice but to open its eyes to her talent.
