The Italian automobile company Maserati has updated its iconic Trident logo, with the launch of its new super sports car, Maserati MC20 – with 621 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V6. The logo got a light restyling that doesn’t look much different at first glance, but it is sure it won’t be left unnoticed by the fans of the brand all around the world.
Maserati marks the beginning of a new era with what looks like a minor detail of the MC 20. The MC 20 combines the updated logo with a thorough focus on racing and electrification. The new logo is also on the mainsail of The Maserati Multi 70 trimaran which has the same know-how in aerodynamics, technological innovation, and performance of the MC 20. Both the supercars are developed at the Innovation Lab in Modena.
The team of Maserati Multi 70 trimaran and Giovanni Soldini has been chosen by Maserati for announcing the name of this new super sports car developed, engineered, and built in Italy. The name of the supercar was unveiled in an unconventional way by Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena, Italy. The logo of the super sports car along with the new mainsail graphics is designed by Centro Stile Maserati as a tribute to the Brand’s new era. The leading ocean racer, Giovanni Soldini who has a long-term association with the Maserati by the same values of passion, adrenaline, and pursuit for highest performance comes as a leading spokesperson for the new sports car. They have been working together since 2012 in a strategic partnership far beyond any ordinary sponsorship.
The Maserati Multi 70 trimaran is a laboratory boat that combines the aerodynamics, technological innovations, and performance know-how of Modena Innovation Lab engineers. The high-performance trimaran also has a connection with the new Maserati super sports car as the team of engineers and technicians was guided with the same values when developing the MC 20. The MC20 which is the acronym for Maserati Corse 2020 is the first model of the brand’s new era.
The New Maserati Logo
The new logo for Maserati designed in-house at the Maserati Centro Stile in Turin, Italy was unveiled at the digital launch of the marque’s new sports car MC20 in Modena. According to Maserati, the identity is redesigned for a more modern, elegant, and stylish graphics without compromising on their legacy. The shift of the Maserati’s badge to a simpler color palette is one of the most noticeable changes in the identity. The red color in the previous logo has been replaced with just white and dark blue. The blue color morphs into a very deep shade with a lacquered effect in the logo which the brand calls Maserati blue. There is a more subtle update on the trident symbol on the logo with the arrows on the side rounded for greater balance and a seamless connection between the upper and lower sections.
The company’s founder, Mario Maserati who originally designed the Trident logo says that they gave a more dynamic overall effect to the identity with the distances between the trident and the background. The original Trident logo was inspired by the fountain of Neptune in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore, which is a nod to the company’s roots in Bologna, where it was founded in 1914. The logo which is also a reference to the sea god’s strength has been changed throughout the steering-wheel, pillars, wheel caps, and front grille of the Maserati MC 20.
A “High-Tech Effect”
Maserati envisioned the new logo to evoke the brand’s digital considerations of polished aluminum for a more high tech effect that evokes polished aluminum. The updated trident pillar badge including the trident logo and Maserati script on the back of the car is changed with a “satiny” finish rather than a “glossy chrome finish”. The pillar badge of enclosed in an oval with a lightning bolt running through it on the Maserati’s previous trident has also been removed in a further move towards simplifying the design. The subtle update on the Maserati wordmark at the car’s rear makes for a simpler and more modern look that will also be used for all the future models from the manufacturer.
The rebranding of automotive brands like BMW, Toyota, Nissan, and Volkswagen in the past years, has set forward a trend of a flatter design that adapts well with digital applications. With the redesigned identity, Maserati reflects the bridging between its luxurious past and a more modern future. The Maserati MC 20 is their first car that is painted at the company’s Modena based futuristic plant equipped with “innovative and environment-friendly technologies. Maserati still keeps a focus on the past, which is evident through the colors which boast their legacy. The red shade refers to Maserati’s first racing car Tipo 26 as it evokes the explosive power of a volcano.
