These Moth Larvae Are Running Their Own Little Horror Show!

Bizzare Bugs? The Pink Underwing Moth Larvae resemble the human skull!

Spotting a Pink Underwing moth is surely a moment worth capturing. Unlike a common moth, this one has picked a mesmerizing shade from the colour spectrum. As the name suggests, it displays a beautiful pink colour on its lower wings. The pink underwing moth is one of those friends from the animal kingdom who can deceive you when resting. Yes, you read that right. You might confuse it with a leaf or stem.

But the most spectacular phase of life-cycle is its larva stage. Why, you ask? Well, you see, unlike the adult moth, these larvae showcase a curious pattern altogether!

What is so different about this larva?

Nature surely has bestowed every creature with a peculiarity of appearance. Some are simple, while some are truly weird yet magnificent! And well, this moth larva definitely falls into the weird category because it  looks a lot like the human skull. Huge symmetrical circles that resemble eye sockets. It gets darker in the middle, so yes, you can imagine pupils, too! The white teeth-like pattern is the cherry on cake in this Halloween costume attempt.

Kinda creepy, but it still is a sight not to be missed.

Why such display of colours?

Um, isn’t it obvious? Like with every other member of the animal kingdom, theor external aspect acts as camouflage.  So, the colour isn’t just for show, but works perfectly to keep away the predators. The same tactic evolves into resembling a leaf once these moths reach the adult stage.

Where can we look for them? Are they common?

Nah! Not common at all. In fact, this species of moth is endangered. They can be spotted in the Australian rainforest. This month’s world heavily depends on a collapsed shrub, carronia multisepelea. This vine is responsible for providing food and suitable habitat for the moth to survive and breed in. If you wish to spot and photograph this rare creature, plan a trip to the subtropical rainforest, making sure the altitude is lower than 600m.

In all honesty, nothing comes easy, right?
