Amidst the widespread outburst of the coronavirus, one of the frequently asked questions is whether or not pets or animals can get covid-19. We are here to tell you all that you need to know about this.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the exact source of the covid-19 is not known but what we do know is that it was originally transmitted from bats. There isn’t a lot of evidence (limited information available) to say that animals can catch covid-19 and thus the chances are likely to be low. A lot more studies are needed to understand the full impact and extent of the virus.
Although the information is limited and thus chances seem very low but that doesn’t mean that your pet is completely safe. There are situations where transmission can happen.
WHO says that since coronavirus is a zoonotic disease, the transmission between people and animals isn’t impossible. WHO’s report said that detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several viruses in animals haven’t affected us yet thus the transmission isn’t extremely contagious but it is possible.
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
It was also seen that dogs that did get the virus did not transmit it to other dogs. I know the picture being portrayed is extremely confusing and unsettling but this doesn’t mean you need to panic. Protect your pets and strays around, clean them regularly and focus on a good diet for them just as you are doing for yourself.
Stay safe and practice social- distancing, both for yourself and your pets!
